Wimbledon Embraces Video Review Technology in 2025.

Wimbledon court with replay technology

The tournament joins the US and Aussie Opens in implementing replay technology.

Video review technology will make its debut at Wimbledon this year.

Competitors will gain the ability to contest particular rulings from the chair umpire, echoing the system already in operation at both the US Open and the Aussie major.

This innovation is slated for use on Centre Court and the number one court for the duration of the tournament and on the remaining featured courts when they are staging singles matches.

This move comes just a year after the All England Club implemented electronic line calling, which brought an end to the centuries-old tradition of line officials.

Reviewable Decisions

Players will not be permitted to challenge the accuracy of the ELC system, but they can ask for the official to re-examine other situations, such as:

  • If a ball has double-bounced.
  • If a ball touched an rival's racket or person on the way past.
  • Possible hindrance end of a point.

Importantly, there will be no cap on the amount of reviews a competitor can request.

Case in Point

A recent case occurred in a recent tournament last week, where a top player used the review system against his opponent.

Draper conceded it was a tough call for the umpire, but believed his opponent had "played the rules quite well."

The umpire watched a replay and ruled Draper was responsible for interference, granting the point to Medvedev.

Wider Implementation

Video reviews aren't new for Grand Slams. The system was adopted at the US Open since 2023 and the Aussie Open since 2025.

Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the ATP circuit will have the system in place at every one of its tournaments.

Further Updates

A further innovation at The Championships 2025 will be the introduction of visual indicators on scoreboards to support the verbal announcements from the ELC system.

This solves situations where fans have sometimes been uncertain if a ball was out or in.

Finally, with exactly a century of days remaining until the beginning of the tournament, organizers have also announced an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
